This alpine adventure combines the two longest and technically challenging alpine ridges of the Pirin mountain range – the „King’s Court“ traverse and the climb of Kamenishka Doll’s northwest ridge.

Over the course of two days, together, we’ll overcome more than a kilometer of scrambling and rock climbing, nestled among some of Pirin’s the most breath-taking panoramas and to top it all off – we’ll watch the sunset and enjoy the countless stars in the night sky, at the iconic Tevno lake refuge.

ITINERARY

DAY ONE
Route: Bezbog chalet – King’s Court East Ridge Traverse – Tevno lake refuge – (optional – sunset at Valyavishki chukar peak)
Distance: 9 km
Elevation gain/loss: 670 m+ / 390 m-

Our starting point is Gotse Delchev chalet, at 8:30. Ascent by lift to Bezbog hut and hike to Popovo lake (1:30h). After another 1:30h of walking past the panoramic Demirkapiya pass, we reach the base of Demirkapiiski chuki peak.

This is where our alpine route begins. Slightly challenged by the initial 15m of vertical climbing, we are then treated to 700m of scrambling and short rappels on sharp ridges, and vertical climbing on menacing gendarmes.

In a total of about 3:30h, we will have reached the highest point for the day – King’s Court peak.

Here we will rest and enjoy a unique view of our harbor for the night – the Tevno lake refuge.

After a short walk, we are already at the refuge and we will have a delicious dinner, inevitably turning our heads at tomorrow’s objective – Kamenishka Doll peak and its impenetrable northwest face.

Optionally, if we don’t feel too tired, we could also hike up to nearby Valyavishki chukar to enjoy the classic view of the sunset from the summit!

DAY TWO
Route: Climbing Kamenishka doll’s northwest face and hike through Valevishki lakes.
Distance: 12 km
Elevation gain/loss: 831 m+ / 1114 m-

Rising early for a proper alpine start, the sky barely a shade of purple, we are already at the base of Kamenishka Doll’s north face – an amphitheater of mountaineering that invites us ever higher. The rope, harnesses and helmets come out of the packs, and we begin our vertical adventure.

A sheer granite bastion guards the way forward, but we make quick work of it and continue along the razor-sharp path up into the sky.

Exposed traverses and vertical gendarmes begin, line up one after the other, and the higher we go, the spicier it gets!

Soon enough, the crux is looming above us. The short corner with perfectly smooth walls is broken up by a finger crack, allowing us to playfully enjoy this little obstacle.

Next – an airy climb along a steep cracks, and we are already on the summit ridge, with its last tricky cruxes, leading us to the proud summit of Kamenishka Doll.

Photos are a mandatory part of our break here! We are now faced with the hike back to the refuge and another panoramic part of Pirin mountain – the Valecishki lakes cirque.

The hike out is long, but the memories of this great alpine adventure will be our constant companions until we come down the mountain and they become permanently etched into our souls…
