MOUTNAINEERING COURSE - LEVEL ONE

This course is exactly for you if you dream of climbing distant peaks such as the Mont Blanc, the Elbrus, the Brighthorn, Lyskamm or Kazbegi.

Our goal is to give you the basic skills and knowledge to survive in the big mountains. It hardly needs mentioning that her majesty – The Winter – is much very demanding on your physical and technical skills as a mountaineer.
What sets winter mountaineering apart is that classic winter traverses have technical sections that can be dangerous and very demanding.
Therefore, this course emphasizes not only on your movement skills, but also on your technical rope skills, as well as a basic knowledge of the winter mountain environment.

THE COURSE

The Mountaineering course covers all the essential winter skills – clothing systems, proper crampons and ice axe technique on all terrain, moving as a rope team. All the skills to deal with terrain that is technically easy, but dangerous and where falls have very serious consequences. You will learn how to lead your less experienced friends on the critical sections of your climb. You will also learn how to prevent common mountaineering mistakes.

MAIN TOPICS
– Brief lecture on clothing systems and equipment
– Backpack arrangement
– Crampon technique on different types of terrain and slope angles
– Self-arrest in the event of a fall – with and without an ice axe
– Basic alpine knots
– Setting up protection in different types of snow
– Abseiling with and without a harness
– Moving and belaying on steep snow slopes
– Fixing ropes on dangerous horisontal and/or veritcal sections
– A short lecture on hypothermia and frostbite
– Correct technique for snow and mixed ridges, and cornices
– Short lecture on snow bivouacs
– Avalanche Safety Basics

ITINERARY

Friday evening
Arrival and accommodation in Malovitsa refuge. Lecture on winter mountaineering - dangers, basic rules, clothing, equipment...

Saturday - Practical training 
We will focus on the basics - walking with crampons and ice axes on a variety of terrain and self-arrest training. We will also learn how to make anchor points in the snow and by using the terrain. Of course, we will also test our anchors by abseiling with a harness and via improvised methods. We'll put the basics of movement into practice on snow slopes and ridges.
In the evening we'll host lectures on the Fundamentals of Avalanche Safety and Hypothermia and Frostbite.

Sunday - let's practice some more!
This day dedicated to fixing ropes and proper technique for moving over snow and mixed ridges, and around large cornices.

Милен е лицензиран IFMGA алпийски водач and планински спасител, понастоящем началник на ПСС база Алеко на Витоша. С прекараните близо 30 години в планината, той е сред най-опитните професионалисти у нас, а освен това е и запален парапланерист. Милен също така е и дипломиран треньор и инструктор по катерене и алпинизъм, завършил в НСА, катедра ТАО (Туризъм, Алпинизъм и Ориентиране). Има редица изкачвания по класическите върхове на Алпите, Кавказ, Мароко и Южна Америка, включително изкачване на иглата Gillaumet от масива FitzRoy в Южна Патагония.
