Vihren Peak in Pirin Mountains – winter ascent for advanced hikers
Vihren is the highest peak in the Pirin Mountains and the third highest on the Balkan Peninsula – 2914 m. It is located near the Bansko ski resort – the most popular and visited in Bulgaria.
The marble slopes of Vihren attract thousands of hikers every summer. But in the winter, far fewer people manage to reach the summit. Climbing it in winter conditions is a real challenge!
Join us on this unforgettable adventure!
PROGRAM
Day 1
We’ll meet in the afternoon on the day before the climb at the Shiligarnika parking above Bansko. If you need transportation, we can help arrange it. We’ll get to know each other and hand out the necessary gear. Today we’ll take a short hike to the Vihren Hut, where we’ll spend the night. The hut offers warm rooms and a restaurant.
During the hike, we’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Dzhamdzhiev Rocks, Vihren Peak, Palashitsa, and many other!
Distance: 5 km
Elevation gain: 250 m+
Duration: 2,5 hours
Day 2
Today is the big day! We start our hike early and head toward Muratovo Lake, covered with deep snow. Soon, the jagged peaks of Donchovi Karauli come into view, enclosing the valley with their steep slopes. Once we reach the lake, the landscape is dominated by Muratov Peak, whose north face dominates over us. From here, we’ll begin our ascent along the smooth ridge of Hvoynati Peak (2632 m), and with every meter we climb, more and more of the beauty of Todorka, Banderishki Chukar, and all the Banderishki Lakes will unfold behind us.
Once we reach this intermediate peak along our route, we’ll have a break to take photos… but also to gather our strength!
Right before our eyes stands the mighty silhouette of Vihren! A short descent toward Kabata saddle will give our legs a little more energy before we attack the final steep slope below the summit, and once we reach it, we’ll be able to shout with joy!
All around us, the sea of Pirin peaks will stretch out in white! From Albutin and Sinanitsa, all the way to Kamenitsa, Zaba, and Yalovarnika… from Todorka, all the way to Polezhan and Strazhite!
We’ll capture the memory not only in our cameras but also in our hearts, and then we’ll head back the way we came. Of course, we’ll stop at the Vihren hut for some tea and to once again admire the majestic presence of Vihren. And then we’ll set off back toward civilization with jubilant spirits, eager to return here once more…
